Everyday Stress Management Techniques

  • 1. Prevention is better than cure when coping with stress. Try to always remain positive. This can be extremely hard, especially if you are in a negative workplace, but if you stay positive then it is possible this will rub off on other people. If you are in a positive place, then stress will be less likely to strike.
  • 2. Be nice to people as often as you can. This includes your boss! If you are nice, then after a while, people are less likely to berate you or give you hassle. This doesn't mean you can be a walk over though, you still have the right to stand up for yourself, but try to be less defensive if you can.
  • 3. Relaxation techniques are a wonderful way of relieving the affects of stress if they are already upon you. Calm music can once again put you in a positive frame of mind and this will lower your blood pressure.
  • 4. Deep breathing exercises are a fantastic way of promoting well being in yourself. It gets the blood flowing with extra oxygen thus providing your body with positive things.
  • 5. Exercise. Cycling, running, walking at a brisk pace, all fantastic ways of releasing stress. Also, pretty much any other sport will also reduce your stress levels too. With probably the exception of golf!
  • 6. If you are in a stressful situation and you are finding that you are becoming overwhelmed, then it's time to break whatever you are doing down into small manageable sections. Ask yourself for example, 'can I get through the next 15 minutes?' You can, you get through those minutes, you've accomplished something. Now ask yourself if you can get through the next 15 minutes and then slowly increase that time. Sometimes breaking things into smaller sections allows you to focus and get through those tough times.
  • 7. Eat healthily and regularly. When a person is under stress, more often than not, food is the first thing to go out of the door. But guess what? If you are not eating properly, then your brain is also not being fed, therefore your thoughts are not under as much control as usual. And there begins a vicious cycle as you will become even more stressed. Keep on top of your eating and do not starve your brain.
  • 8. Heard of the expression laugh or cry? What does crying achieve? Normally makes you feel much worse, right? In contrast, laughter brings valuable chemicals to the brain and helps your frame of mind. Think of it this way too, most of the problems we face on a day to day basis, really are not worth worrying that much about. They won't affect your life very greatly in the long run, so just laugh at them, don't pay them much attention, but in learning how to deal with stress focus on the real problems you can solve.

To conclude, stress is a major problem in our modern day life, but because it is so common, there are many stress management techniques out there that can and do help people in many different situations. The methods listed here for managing stress are just a sample of the mass of help that is available to all.
